Ahead of the release of the Korean edition by Sejong Books this month, he was interviewed by Cho Yunjung, writing for leading South Korean daily Chosun Ilbo.

수많은 환경 도서 중에서 ‘6도의 멸종’이 특별한 이유는 지구의 평균 기온이 1℃ 오를 때마다 세계 각지에서 벌어질 상황을 영화처럼 그려낸다는 점이다. 세계적인 환경 연구자 마크 라이너스는 뛰어난 과학자들의 연구가 외면당하는 것에 안타까움을 느껴 책을 집필했고, 출간 즉시 전 세계 베스트셀러에 올랐다. 당시에는 1℃ 상승을 우려했지만 지금은 현실이 되었다. 그는 캘리포니아 대형 산불과 휴스턴 허리케인을 정확하게 예측한 것으로도 유명하다.
기후변화의 시계는 빨라졌고 상황은 더 심각해졌다. 북극곰을 생각하기는커녕 인류는 자신의 생존을 위해서라도 1.5℃ 상승까지는 지켜내야 한다. 사실 3℃ 상승에서 예견된 일들(대형 화재와 허리케인)이 벌써 벌어지고 있는 만큼 이제 여유 시간은 없다. 이번 신간도 지구 기온이 상승할 때마다 벌어지는 사건들이 두려울 만큼 생생하다. 바뀌지 않는다면 2℃, 3℃ 상승까지 소요되는 시간이 훨씬 더 짧아질 것이라는 저자의 긴박한 경고를 담고 있다. 낙관론을 견지한다고 해서 세상이 낙관적으로 바뀌지는 않는다. 한국어판 서문에서는 한국의 에너지 정책에 관한 솔직한 조언을 아끼지 않았다.

Mark Lynas is a journalist, campaigner and author of several books on the environment, including High Tide (2004), Six Degrees (2007), The God Species (2011), Nuclear 2.0 (2013) and Seeds of Science (2018). He has written for CNN, the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Times, the Guardian and is a visiting fellow with the Alliance for Science at Cornell University, New York. He lives in Herefordshire.
